Macular Degeneration Prevention

Macular Degeneration is a progressive disease, in which the central portion of the retina deteriorates. As the degeneration progresses, finer details become difficult to see.

two types of macular degeneration

  1. dry AMD
    1. Most commonly seen, Dry Macular Degeneration is when parts of the macula get thinner with age and tiny clumps of protein called drusen grow. You slowly lose central vision.
  2. wet AMD
    1. Less common, Wet AMD occurs when new and abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina. These vessels may leak blood or other fluids, causing scarring of the macula. Vision loss is greater and faster during the wet stage.

    1. Family History of Age-Related Macular Degeneration
    2. Over the Age of 50
    3. Smoking Cigarettes
    4. Are Overweight
    5. Have Diets that are rich in Saturated Fats
    6. Heart Disease and Hyperlipidemia
    7. Cuaccasian population is at elevated risk due to low pigment to protect from UV damage.
  2. How Can I Prevent Macular Degeneration and Protect My Eyes?
    1. UV protected glasses
    2. No use of tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, vapes, etc.)
    3. Consuming vitamins rich in eye-friendly nutrients such as lutein and zeaxanthin, omega 3 supplements or consumption foods that contain fatty fishes, vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc.
